Afterglow by Catherine Coulter
This book follows a romantic novelist who is set up on a blind date with a doctor in San Francisco. The subsequent encounters between them vary between dislike and interest on both their parts. Throw in a snobbish ex-wife, two stepford-like children of the doctor, and two kooky parents of said novelist and you have an interesting read to entertain you when lighter reading is what you seek.

Up From Slavery by Booker T. Washington
Born into a slave family in 1856, Booker writes of his life in slavery and his struggles/triumphs as slavery is abolished. His family then had to support themselves with little practical knowledge. Booker was determined to rise above and eventually, through much hard work, he became the head of the Tuskegee Institute. For me the highlight of this memoir was Booker's great appreciation of what he learned from people's character as opposed to his 'book learning.'

A Dublin Student Doctor by Patrick Taylor
This is the third book by Patrick Taylor and my least favorite. Doctor Fingal O’Reilly is a country doctor in a small town in Ireland. He is a crusty old soul with a heart of gold. But this book goes into detail of his relationship with his parents and his background of education. Perhaps I would have liked it better if I’d read it first.
