What is Project READ?
Project READ is Longview Public Library's Adult Literacy Program started with funding from the Department of Education and supported by the City of Longview. Project READ began in 1986. We are now in our 24th year of providing services to the people of Cowlitz County and surrounding areas.
The mission of Project READ is to provide tutoring assistance to adults who need to improve their basic skills to meet personal and career goals that would enhance and enrich the quality of their lives as family members, adults in the workforce, and as citizens in their communities.
Since 1986, we have assisted over 1,800 adults in achieving their learning goals. We have been able to provide this service with the help of almost 1000 volunteers from our community. Currently, we have between 55 and 65 tutors serving 70 to 75 learners with a waiting list of anywhere from 10 to 20 individuals. We are always in need of qualified volunteers!
Tutoring is an incredibly rewarding activity. It requires some training and time. Below are the steps to becoming a tutor.
Become A Tutor
- Submit an application.
- Attend a Tutor Training Workshop to learn how we tutor and who our learners are. The workshop is 10 hours spread over several days. Call 442-5321 for the workshop dates.
- Training is also available online. Call Elizabeth at 442-5321 for more information.
- Commit 2 hours per week for at least 6 months.
