What is Project READ?

Project READ is Longview Public Library’s Adult Literacy Program started with funding from the Department of Education and supported by the City of Longview. Project READ began in 1986. In October 2006, we celebrated our 20 th anniversary of providing services to the people of Cowlitz County and surrounding areas.
The mission of Project READ is to provide tutoring assistance to adults who need to improve their basic skills to meet personal and career goals that would enhance and enrich the quality of their lives as family members, adults in the workforce, and as citizens in their communities.
Since 1986, we have assisted over 1,600 adults achieve their learning goals. We have been able to provide this service with the help of almost 900 volunteers from our community. Currently, we have between 55 and 65 tutors serving 70 to 75 learners with a waiting list of anywhere from 10 to 20 individuals. We are always in need of qualified volunteers!
All of our services are offered free of charge. We base our tutoring and small group lessons on the needs of the learners. We are able to work together for the most effective results.
If you are interested in joining our team of dedicated volunteers, please contact Elizabeth Partridge at 360.442.5321 or email elizabeth.partridge@ci.longview.wa.us. Dates for the next formal training are announced here.
